This is simple arithmetic and should be common knowledge since knowing what you are contracting for in the auction is part and parcel of bridge. Those more experienced players will understand that sometimes your aim might be above or below your contract; but this is much rarer. For example playing in a PAIRS tournament your aim is to make as many tricks as possible - so you might well aim for overtricks. Do not worry about the rare occasions where your aim might not be for your contract. Just make sure you know how many tricks you are aiming for.
